On the morning of May 14, 2025, China and Vietnam officially launched their first direct international road freight route. Convoys carrying electronic components, fresh fruits and vegetables, and consumer goods simultaneously departed from Nanning (Guangxi) and Kunming (Yunnan) heading straight to Hanoi.

This marks the first time Chinese trucks have been allowed to transport goods directly into Vietnam’s interior under the Greater Mekong Subregion Cross-Border Transport Agreement (GMS-CBTA), aimed at facilitating cross-border movement of goods and passengers.

The new route not only shortens transportation time and reduces logistics costs, but also expands market access to Vietnam’s domestic market for Chinese businesses, while unlocking greater trade cooperation potential across the region.

According to People’s Daily, the new international road transport route from China to Hanoi was officially opened through two entry points: Hekou (Yunnan) and Youyi Guan/Youyi Pass (Guangxi) border gates.

The transport operates on a “single container to destination” and “single truck to destination” model, taking full advantage of point-to-point road transport, offering high efficiency with minimal transshipment.

Compared to traditional methods, this approach saves each truck approximately one day of travel and reduces costs by 800 to 1,000 RMB (around 2.8–3.6 million VND).

A total of 18 trucks and 2 passenger vehicles participated in the inaugural trip and arrived in Hanoi on May 15.

In addition to saving time and cost, the new freight route also improves the convenience and efficiency of international road transport between China and Vietnam.

Moreover, this transport initiative marks a significant step in logistics cooperation between the two countries and further strengthens regional economic connectivity within the Greater Mekong Subregion, fostering broader collaboration with neighboring countries.
